The Gilded Hive is a multisensory experience designed to invite the viewer into deeper connection with honeybees.
The Gilded Hive will be a landmark, a meeting place, and a platform for spontaneous experience.
It is designed to hold the viewer in a cocoon of glowing hexagonal structures featuring stunning displays of real honeycomb that are designed to delight your senses.
I wanted to create an experience that could speak to the inner struggle that is within so many people who find deep connection in the natural world yet are drawn towards working with artificial technology as a means of survival.
The Gilded Hive is made with REAL Honeycomb
I spent years using technology to try to emulate the work of the bees. And in my pursuit to replicate this profound architecture in a way that could pass on the feelings of reverence that pulled me to share the work of the bees, I had an idea.
Could I preserve honeycomb in metal so that I could share not just a replica of the honeycomb pattern, but the original work of the bees?
With much trial and error I developed my unique technique of electroplating copper around real honeycomb so that I could not only share the work of the bees, but I could infuse it with the magic of other natural things like crystals, bones, and even mushrooms and ferns.
Now I invite you to support me in the next phase of my journey
The Gilded Hive will feature real honeycomb preserved in glass-like clear resin. This medium is ideal for magnifying to structural beauty of honeycomb while also amplifying it with complimentary lighting and steel structural displays.
Just as in my work with electroplating honeycomb, I was able to take an established artistic medium and find the perfect conditions under which to use it with honeycomb. I plan to do the same now to create truly awe inspiring pieces of preserved honeycomb.
My vision is to combine my electroplated honeycomb with resin honeycomb blocks to create a awe inspiring visual and tactile experience.
